In a long afternoon, we only saw part of one floor of this amazing (and free museum). It really is a wonder. These pictures are from the Enlightenment Room -- which mostly highlights the collections of the founders of the Museum. We looked at this room, the Egyptian Room (mummies!), and the Greek Room.
(Bill browsing in the Enlightenment Room)
This picture is a detail of the famous Elgin Marbles. These panels were taken many years ago by British anthropoligists from the Parthenon in Greece. The panels extend all around a large room -- and, of course, there are explanations of what each panel depicts. There is controversy over whether the panels should remain here or be returned to Greece. (They were saved from crumbling destruction by the British, or so they say here!)
We want to go back to this Museum while we're here -- it will be impossible to see everything in it -- that would take a lifetime.
