THIS POST IS LINKED TO WORLD BIRD WEDNESDAY hosted by Springman.
** REVISED AFTER A LITTLE HELP FROM (VIRTUAL) FRIENDS. THANK YOU to all the birders who identified what we incorrectly guessed were some type of juvenile heron as instead LIMPKINS. Needless to say, a new bird. We are happy to know and grateful to all who helped with the ID. It's wonderful to be a small part of this virtual birding community.
Quite a few of these birds were hanging out last weekend at Lake Trafford in Collier County.
We think they are juvenile herons of some sort, but can't identify them for sure, even after consulting Sibley.
This lovely Great Blue was among the other birds we sighted at the lake:
So it was a good birding afternoon, even if we couldn't identify everything we saw (we needed some of you professional birders!).
This was a fun interactive post, Sallie...with great shots!

Hi Sallie, I could not even guess it. I have never heard of limpkins, but they look like herons to me. Nice reflections of the birds.

They are really beautiful ! Like you I thought they were little herons. I search on my dictionnary "Limpkin" and found "Courlan" : A new bird for me ! Thanks as usual, Sallie !

Nice bird shots of birds I don't see here. I do see a lot of great blue herons and I don't think that is what you have. It lacks the black crest and has white pants rather than the brown of the great blue. It may be a tricolored heron, I'm not sure.

Lovely captures.
It's great that fellow bloggers can come along and help out with ID's like this.

I think its a Limpkin as well...and a great shot of it too!!

Great capture of limpkins! They are not easy to see, let alone get such clear images. I was hoping to see one when traveling to Florida, but no such luck.

Well - you've shown me something new again, Sallie - who ever even heard of a Limpkin!
Posted by: Barb | May 17, 2011 at 08:37 PM
Oh, dear. I've been reading too much news. Your blog title made me think that some crime had been committed by "unknown juveniles." I prefer your version, very nice photos.

That is a remarkable sighting! My Audubon guide confirms MainBirder's suspicion...A Limpkin it is! Great catch!

From way over here after consulting my copy of Sibley I'll suggest that these are Limpkin.
