We are getting ready to close up the Canal Cottage for the season, so we had no time to go exploring last week. There are some pretty birds here in the neighborhood though -- providing a good show for those of us snowbirds who are slow to migrate north for the summer.
One morning there were at least four common flickers:
Another morning, the woodpeckers were out in force .. apparently with their newly-fledged babies. You might as well get up at first light when these guys are right outside your bedroom window. They're bad pictures because of the low light, but I loved that I saw the baby being fed.
Below are some miscellaneous birds around the RV Park. The kildeer ran all over trying to lead me away from her two babies (really I wouldn't have bothered them, but kildeer parents never believe that). I saw the babies skitter around behind her, but couldn't get a picture. And the usual mockingbirds (one morning I counted fifteen before I lost track). And, as always, the Ibis.
Apparently the flickers were just flying through, because we saw them early in the week and then not again. The woodpeckers are still here. I still didn't get the perfect picture.
I kind of hate thinking about the summer birds we'll miss, but I look forward to what we'll see back in Oregon -- and along the way as we travel.
Thank you to Stewart for hosting WILD BIRD WEDNESDAY and to all the wonderful birders who share their pictures and knowledge!
Florida is definitely a wonderful word ! I like a lot our shots of he baby woodpecker ! Here, black birds built their nest in the hedge. I just saw three blue eggs and now the poor father is flying all the day long to feed Mrs blackbird !

These great photos look just fine to me! We now regularly see birds that normally fly back north for the winter taking up residence here. Especially Canadian Geese.

People in MN are opening up their cottages for the season. Are those huge Florida Mosquitos chasing you away?

I'm afraid to say that I'm migrating the wrong way for a few days, from Florida to 100++ degree Phoenix! However it will be comforting to see our relatives and enjoy the change in habitat.

Great shots of the birds. I love flickers. I love all birds for that matter but flickers are a special favorite.

I've never seen a baby red-bellie so I'm envious. A sweet shot that is.
When are you leaving Sallie? Stay safe. Looking forward to seeing the places you'll visit.

Sallie, great variety. I always love the woodies and the flickers. The Ibis are cool birds too. I wish you safe travels back to Oregon.

You have quite a menagerie down there! It's fun to have so many birds close. We've got a bunch in our backyard, bushes and trees - cardinals, morning doves, sparrows, etc.
Years ago we lived on the 2nd floor of a 4 unit condo in Ft. Lauderdale...and we had woodpeckers in the palm tree right outside a side window. Drove us nuts with all the pecking! :)

Thank you Phil for catching my error... I said migrating north for the winter when I met summer! I fixed it. Living in Florida where it's warm all winter makes it easy to get my seasons confused ;>)!

I never heard of anyone migrating north for the winter Sallie. Enjoy your trip north and the birds you see on the way.
