Seldovia is a small island town in Katchemak Bay that is accessible only by boat or plane. It was our mid-way destination when we took a wildlife and sightseeing boat trip from Homer.
Our Captain took the slow route getting there, with a lot of stops so that we could look at all the wonderful sealife and scenery that I posted about here (and more that I didn't get pictures of). Then he docked at Seldovia where we had almost three hours to eat lunch and stroll before re-boarding the boat for the return trip (which was faster, pretty much without photo-op stops).
We walked all around the little town. There were a few nice homes, an interesting old Russian Orthodox Church, several sweet little pocket parks on the main street, and an awful lot of homes and buildings that had seen better days.
Seldovia was very heavily damaged by the Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964. It used to have boardwalks throughout the whole town, but most of them were destroyed during the quake or in the following "urban renewal" projects. One person told us that the town, which was a fishing village really, was just beginning to recover from the severe quake damage when the bottom fell out of the fishing industry. Now it is mainly a destination for tourists and sports fishing charter boats.
The tourist literature said that artists and craftspersons also find it a good place to live and work, but in our limited time there we did not find a whole lot that interested us. (We weren't in the market for art in any case -- not much room in our teeny tiny RV for art or crafts.) There were a lot of rustic chainsaw carvings, which normally don't impress us much, but I rather liked these puffins.
A few of the sights as the boat pulled away from Seldovia on the return trip.
SHARING WITH OUR WORLD TUESDAY with thanks to the wonderful ladies of the hosting team.
Thanks for the post and photos. Sure looks a lot different than Ohio LOL

It will probably change more as tourists continue to visit.

Love your photos, especially the first one, it is amazing!
I like folk art more than most, but chainsaw art was never high on my list. It sure looks like a beautiful place...

I remember that quake in 1964. It was on Easter Sunday. We heard about it coming out of church. It had snowed that year for Easter. Your words and how the town of Seldovia suffered, still does from effects of the fishing industry, brought it to mind.
Those blue flowers look like Icelandic poppies. Just gorgeous.

I love discovering places like that. It must have been quite the town back in the days. Lovely scenery. I think I would have bought that puffin sculpture and tied it on top of the RV ;)

The community does looks a little forlorn and abandoned but brightened by visitors and the pretty blue flowers.

I am enjoying your trip thru Alaska. This town is pretty but sounds like they need some help. I love the carvings, especially the Puffin! Have a happy week!

LOVE this post! What a unique and very beautiful place. Island homes fascinate me and I can imagine, quite easily, living here -- or at least visiting:)
Stay cool this week!

That is my kind of excursion. Slow going out, some time to eat and walk around, and then get back faster.

You could get one of those fixer-uppers, Sallie. I'd come to visit. Love that tranquil first shot.

The first shot of the reflection is gorgeous. You got some great ones also of the snowcapped mountains and trees. The puffin piece is really beautiful...would love to have that in my garden.

Very nice photos. I am gaining a better sense of Alaska via your eyes. Heretofore, I imagined it as a place to see icebergs.
