Sticking close to home this week doing some fun stuff that I don't document well with photographs. You know, like cooking, eating, reading, walking, visiting with local family. Of course I do take pictures sometimes when I do the latter two things, but photo-worthy nature subjects are hard to find around here on hot, dry August days. I might have to teach myself to take decent pictures of food and people at least during the height of summer.
We are also hopefully planning some not-too-distant travel (and I think everyone knows by now what I mean by "we" in this context.) I am grateful to the Travel Planner. I am also glad our weather here in Oregon seems to be cooling down some and I look forward to a few more good photo walks here. Meanwhile, while the other half of us is planning for the future, I'm collecting memories from the past. Obviously, I've also been trying to sort through a million or so digital photos.
I do better making family portraits of birds and animals than I do of human ones. Here are a few:
Top row: hungry baby Great Blue Heron and mom - Wakodahatchee Nature Center Florida; Pie-Billed Grebe family, Fern Ridge Lake Oregon; Swan Family, Germany River Cruise
Middle: Sandhill crane family, Upriver RV Resort Florida; Wood stork with baby in nest, Wakodahatchee; Whistling Ducks, Florida.
Bottom row: Burrowing Owl family, Cape Coral Florida; Stork Family, Wakodahatchee; Ospreys, Florida Keys
Pronghorn Antelope, Hart Mountain Refuge Oregon
The above is not my best or favorite animal picture by far but it is from the one and only place I didn't post about after our July trip to Eastern Oregon so it gets a separate picture. Below are some pictures that really are candidates for favorite animals -- and favorite places visited.
Elk, Rocky Mountain National Park Colorado; Bison, British Columbia; Brown Bears, Alaska;
Moose, Rocky Mountain NP; Mountain Sheep, Colorado; Musk Ox, Prudhoe Bay Alaska
Mother and Baby Moose, Cook Inlet Alaska; Stone Sheep, British Columbia; Caribou, Alaska
Virtual nature viewing is almost as much fun as the real thing! I love the way digital cameras make it possible to capture all these memories. Here's a fly-in memory shot from another trip:
Happy September everyone.
Don't forget to say Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit on Wednesday.
Addendum from Wikipedia: "Rabbit rabbit rabbit" is a superstition found in Britain and North America wherein a person says or repeats the words "rabbit", "rabbits" and/or "white rabbits" aloud upon waking on the first day of a month, to ensure good luck for the rest of it. The origin of the superstition is unknown.

You are really good at making family portraits of birds and animals. These are amazing! Loved learning about the rabbit superstition, I didn't know that.
Thank you so much for sharing them on Wandering Camera!

Hello Sallie
I absolutely love your nature post, from the smallest creatures such as the Burrowing Owls and Whistling Ducks, to the impressive Buffalo Bears and Moose, none of which I have ever seen.
Thank you for taking the time to go through your photos, sharing your lovely memories.
The sky shot is stupendous, taken in the air above the clouds, Wow, it's really beautiful, what a wonderful experience.
Sending you hugs from Portugal.:=)

wonderful wildlife still in your area. The Burrowing Owl family would be on my "must see" list if I was anytime able to travel again. They are so cute. And that Caribou, that must be a one of a kind antler. It must be the tallest I have ever seen. On any deer.
Take care!

Who cares about human photos when you can admire these birds & other animals! I hardly ever succeed in animal photos, but saw a few swans and white-tailed deer on our vacation in Kustavi. About their quality I say nothing :)

I love those Florida birds -- wish I could get back to Wakodahatchee! Eileen in Maryland says that a lot of Florida birds are appearing up the East Coast.

Hello Sallie,
What a great critter post, so many different animals and birds. I love them all, I would love to see the Caribou and Big Horn Sheep. Florida has great birds, some of my favorites are the Whistling Ducks, Wood Storks and the cute Burrowing Owls. Wonderful mosaics and photos. Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a happy weekend! PS, thank you for the comment on my blog.

Great shots! The rabbit is adorable.

I love all these amazing wildlife shots. I'm terrible about taking pictures of people and food. But staying home to cook is a good thing.

All of them look like they are showing off for your camera. The one that would scare me is the bear, I'm not sure what I would do if I met one.

Yes, we can capture memories every day.
And we always say Rabbit Rabbit!

You have some great critter pics. You have had some great experiences. I love all the big animal pics, moose, bear, etc. I don't have a photo of either one in the wild.

That a beautiful photo of the pronghorn. I think they used to be common all over CA, but their range has been dramatically reduced. Kind of sad. I missed out on saying "rabbit rabbit rabbit" yesterday, so will try for next month!

I enjoy all the wildlife photos from travels pat, Sallie. Even though we live in NH and see Moose Crossing signs posted along the highways, we have yet to see a single one crossine! Thanks for sharing your wildlife captures. I hope the Travel Planner is planning a wonderful adventure for the next one.

I like the photo of the burrowing owls. Very cute. Lots of good photos in your memory montage. I've never heard of the 'rabbit, rabbit, rabbit' superstition.

I just saw my first burrowing owls in St. Marco Island in February. Every time I see a bunny I think of Peter Rabbit.

Hello Sallie,
It is hard to believe August is over, it would be nice to take a long road trip. Your wildlife views have been great, especially in Alaska. I love the bears, moose and all the birds. I would like to visit the parks in Alaska. Happy September! Have a happy day and a great new week!

Sallie - the burrowing owls are so adorable. And you know I am NUTS about moose ... I have never heard of a stone sheep before. And the antlers on caribou - how do they EVER hold up their heads? Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday!
