-- and other news from last week.
The bird of the week at the neighborhood pond was this Little Blue Heron. Early in the week when it hadn't rained for a few days, the pond was almost completely dry, but then we had a few rainstorms. It would be interesting to follow the birds to see where they go when their feeding spot dries up! They always seem glad to be back.
One of those storms, I think on Wednesday, was a literal eye-opener. Rainstorms are common in late afternoon this time of year, but that one woke us up before dawn with loud claps of thunder and lightning briefly turning our bedroom into broad daylight. There's nothing like starting the day off with a bang!
Earlier last week though the weather was good. And on Sunday (a week ago) we were blessed with a beautiful day and evening without a cloud in the sky. So we stayed up late for the total lunar eclipse. We couldn't have had better seats for the show than we did from the dock area in back of the Canal Cottage.
Lunar Eclipse, May 15, 2022
During a full eclipse, the moon passes through the darkest part of the Earth's shadow (the umbra). According to NASA, the reddish hue happens because orange and red colors remain visible while blue and green light get scattered by dust particles in the atmosphere. Because of the color, lunar eclipses are sometimes called Blood Moons.
Tuesday, May 17
I hardly ever stay up that late these days, so that long night meant no early morning walk happening on Monday. But the next morning, the moon was visible on the street side of our house -- and it still looked full. Although certainly not as dramatic, especially with the point-and-shoot camera which is all I carry on my normal walks.
Great Egrets are common around here -- this one was standing perfectly still on a corner island in the middle of the supermarket parking lot. For a minute, I thought the store had installed a statue. But he was there hunting for food (just like all the rest of us).
In other news of the week for which I'm exceedingly grateful, we were both able to get our second COVID booster shot. We're still masking up in public places, but the booster provides a nice margin of safety.
And also (TA-DA) the bathroom project which has kept us (uh, half of us) busy all season is finished and it is beautiful. We (both halves of us, for sure) are delighted with the way it turned out. I'm amazed that Bill's talented design and skill incorporated a roomy walk-in shower, corner sink cabinet with storage, a wall-hung toilet, and space to maneuver in an area only 7 by 8.

You were fortunate to see the lunar eclipse! It was cool and overcast here. I'm glad you had your second booster--we also had that in May as we had our first boosters a bit earlier than most people did. I still wear a mask in crowded places but I noticed we are a minority in that regard. I spent this week cleaning up the yard and planting vegetables and flowers. I now have the aches and pains to prove it--lol!

love your shots of the full eclipse of the moon. It was a long time I´ve seen one as we have been unlucky with weather.
Glad to see your nature shots.

Good to hear that normal (normal-ish?) rainfall is arriving and making places for the water birds! A newly remodeled bathroom sounds great.

So glad you got to watch the lunar eclipse. It was quite a show, and you photographed it beautifully. I know a lot of people missed it because of clouds.

I'm contemplating my 3rd booster. stay safe! At least it is safe in the outdoors, where I like to be.

Oh, what a wonderful start into the day!!!
I hardly remember when we last had thunder and lightning!
Rain we had, I even made movies.
And this long weekend (Father´s Day) seems to be full of rain, too.
That moon is wonderful.
We have way too much light pollution for this view.
A statue, cute idea.
Your bathroom sounds great. We (hopefully also only half of us) will have fun with the kitchen sink - wish us (him) luck!

it's good you got your booster, we all here ended up getting triple vaxxed but we still got covid in the end, I wonder how much worse it would've been if he hadn't been vaccinated.

Yay for the booster shot and the bathroom project being finished. That sounds really wonderful. Such lovely photos of the birds. I am glad you had good weather for you to enjoy the beautiful eclipse. You got some amazing photos of it too. Very dramatic.

Sallie - incredible shots of the lunar eclipse! And I love the egret photos. We are on Grand Cayman right now, and I was thrilled to see a dozen or so small egrets in (what I guess is a temporary) puddle of water along the road. Maybe I will go back and take some pictures! Congrats to your hubby on the bathroom construction project! And thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday!

I love little blues and yours has such beautiful deep colors. We've had a few rain showers here but most everything soaked right in. And how wonderful to watch the eclipse. We stood out in the driveway a couple of times in the middle of the night. We were surprised no one else was outside! You got wonderful photos! WOW!

What booster jabs do you get in Florida? I was really ill for eight days after the Moderna, and a week ago the Astra Zeneca one knocked me out too. The latter gave me no trouble for the first two.

The eclipse photos are incredible and you didn't even have to go anywhere to get them. Must be exciting to be able to use your new bathroom knowing it is exactly the design you wanted.

Wow... what fantastisc captures of the moon. We sleep at this time and had seen next day on the news in TV.
The bird is wonderful. You have a good eye, to see them on the pond of the neighbours.
